About Dr Bruce Young

BSc (Wits), MBBCh (Wits), MSc (LSE), MMed Nuclear Medicine (Wits), FCNP (SA)

Dr Bruce Young is a nuclear medicine physician at TheraMed Nuclear. He completed his specialist training at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, where he gained experience across the full scope of nuclear medicine practice — from conventional gamma camera and hybrid imaging (SPECT-CT) to PET-CT and radionuclide therapies.

Before specialising, Dr Young worked as a management consultant in London focused on healthcare system design, and holds a Master’s degree in Health Policy and Health Economics from the London School of Economics.

His clinical interests include oncology imaging, thyroid and prostate disease, and nuclear medicine therapies.

Dr Nico Malan

About Dr Nico Malan

MBChB, MMed Nuclear Medicine, FCNP (SA)

Dr Nico Malan is a nuclear medicine physician at TheraMed Nuclear. He served as a Principal Specialist in Nuclear Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand for 15 years, with extensive involvement in specialist training, academic research, and clinical service delivery.

Dr Malan has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed publications and is a co-author of the national PET-CT Guidelines for South Africa, including the forthcoming 2025 edition. He continues to contribute to the field as an examiner and council member of the College of Nuclear Medicine, and was elected to the Executive Committee of the Association of Nuclear Medicine Physicians of South Africa.

He has been active in private practice for over 12 years and is committed to advancing patient care through clinical expertise and the highest standards of professional service.

Dr Janet Reed

About Dr Janet Reed

MBChB Cum Laude (UP), MMed Nuclear Medicine Cum Laude, FCNP (SA)

Dr Janet Reed is a nuclear medicine physician at TheraMed Nuclear. She earned her MBChB (Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria and completed her specialist training at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, qualifying as a specialist in 2023 (Cum Laude) and receiving the Nuclear Technology Product (NTP) medal.

During her registrar training, Dr Reed was a sub-investigator in a clinical trial investigating Ac-225 PSMA therapy for metastatic prostate carcinoma. Her MMed research on the role of F-18 FDG PET/CT in paediatric lymphoma was published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine.

Her clinical interests include nuclear medicine imaging and radionuclide therapy.

About Dr Bianca Cowan

Dr. Bianca Cowan (née Berndorfler) is a Nuclear Medicine Physician at TheraMed Nuclear. She earned her MBChB from the University of Cape Town and completed her specialist training at Tygerberg Hospital, where she graduated with an MMed in Nuclear Medicine (cum laude) and was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Nuclear Physicians of South Africa.

With nearly a decade of experience at Tygerberg Hospital serving as both a registrar and specialist, Dr. Cowan was integral to both clinical service delivery and the training of future specialists. Her contributions including setting CMSA Nuclear Medicine examinations, supervising Master’s theses, and publishing several papers in international peer-reviewed journals. She is also a co-author of the forthcoming South African PET/CT Guidelines (2025 edition).

Dr Cowan is passionate about providing patient-centred care, with specialized clinical interests in PET-CT imaging and Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT).
